Clackamas, OR is an unincorporated community that is just under 30 minutes from Portland’s city center. Clackamas is accounts for 8 city square miles and is part of Clackamas County. While it used to be a census-designated place (CDP) with a smaller population of 6,965 in 2010, the population has grown significantly over the past several years. The current city population has almost tripled, with a growing population of 19,521 residents.

The Clackamas community is served by North Clackamas District #12. The school district is one of the largest in the State of Oregon, covering around 40 square miles of territory. Areas covered include Milwaukie, Southeast Portland, Happy Valley and Clackamas. The district accounts for 27 different schools, including 19 elementary schools, 3 junior high schools and 4 high schools. Of the 27 schools, the Sabin-Schellenberg Professional Technical Center stands out as a having a unique curriculum. The school is for high school students who wish to explore a variety of career and technical education ranging from cosmetology through manufacturing and engineering. There are 70 elective classes in 17 different career field, and 16 career programs that give students the opportunity to earn college credits. Clackamas High School is one of the few schools located in Clackamas, and has 2 campuses, east campus and west campus. The two campuses are connected by a covered walkway that functions as a gateway to the football field and several grass soccer fields.

Clackamas is also home to Camp Withycombe, a training facility for the National Guard. It was originally known as the Clackamas Rifle Range, but renamed to Clackamas Benson after former Governor Frank W. Benson. The camp finally earned it’s present name as Camp Withycombe during World War I after former Governor James Withycombe. It expanded due to military needs for the war, and served as the headquarters for the National Guard. Camp Withycombe presently serves as a supply depot, equipment repair facility and training facility, but the rifle range is closed.
