More About Clatsop County, ORThe county is named for the Clatsop tribe of Native Americans, who lived along the coast of the Pacific Ocean prior to European settlement. The county seat of Clatsop County is the city of Astoria. Astoria is most known for the popular film, The Goonies. A lot of the movie was shot in Astoria, Oregon, and highlighted the city’s maritime history, Victorian architecture, and great natural beauty. Astoria, along with the other cities of Cannon Beach, Gearhart, Seaside and Warrenton, are popular locations because of all the plentiful beaches. Oregonians are wild about their Pacific coast. Probably the most notable natural landmarks of Cannon Beach is Haystack Rock. Haystack Rock is an island at high tide, which places it in the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge includes 1,853 islands, rocks and reef, nearly all of which are federally protected as wilderness.

In addition to the beautiful beaches, Clatsop County offers plenty of trails, museums, markets and state parks. Pictured below is a huge Doug Fir tree that sits outside of the Clatsop County Circuit Court, taken from the David Douglas State Park. The park honors David Douglas, a Scottish botanist who spent several years in the 1820s traveling the forests of the Pacific Northwest collecting plants and seeds for the Royal Botanical Gardens. Douglas tromped through the Columbia River Gorge and deep into the interior Norwest and California cataloging and classifying more than two hundred plants and animals he encountered—many of having names that credit him.
