This Father’s Day weekend is chock full of great options in the Portland metro area, and in this post we will skim the surface of what’s on offer. We’ve got athletic events, cultural celebrations, literary exhibits, film, local music, and shopping combining in some unique (and very Portland) ways here. Leave your expectations behind and explore what Multnomah County has to offer – and make sure to bring your favorite dad along to show them how much they are appreciated!

Portland Pride Run, June 15th

Why not get some exercise and celebrate Pride Month at the same time by joining in the Portland Pride Run? This Saturday morning, participants of all shapes and sizes have the option of running or walking either a 4.5 or 2.5 mile loop around the Portland Waterfront and Eastbank Esplanade. Portland Frontrunners is presenting the event, with local favorite Poison Waters motivating folks along the way. At the finish line there will be snacks, beverages, and music to cool down from the exertion. Although the event is open to the general public, advance registration will get you a commemorative medal. Get more info at the event page here and enjoy some inclusive fun!

Juneteenth Oregon, June 15-16th

Head over to Lillis-Albina Park on Saturday to catch the 52nd annual Juneteenth Oregon Festival. Events will be kicked off with a parade starting at 11:00 AM from King Middle School. From there, the parade will weave its way to the park, where a variety of fun awaits from 12:00-7:00 PM: kids’ activities, food, vendors, raffles, music, and more. Make sure to stop by the History Tent to dig into the roots of Juneteenth, both as a national movement and Oregon’s celebration. The party is brought to you by a host of sponsors, including a number of local, black-owned businesses. Come back on Sunday at 3:00 PM for the Juneteenth Gospel Extravaganza. Juneteenth Oregon is a free event and open to all. Don’t miss out!

Rose City Book & Paper Fair June 14-15th

If you’re a fan of zines, books, vintage magazines and other quirky cultural ephemera, you’re going to want to check out the 18th annual Rose City Book & Paper Fair. The exhibition runs 2:00-8:00 PM on Friday and 10:00 AM-5:00 PM on Saturday at the Lloyd Doubletree Hotel in Portland. There will be a host of vendors showing off their rare finds, and a host of interesting people riffling through them. This event is brought to life by Cascade Booksellers Association, and it’s the perfect opportunity to find a geeky gift for dad! Admission is $5 at the door or buy online here.

Harry Smith 100th Birthday Celebration, June 15th

Harry Smith was keeping Portland weird before Portland knew it was weird. Smith was a multi-talented luminary of the Beat Generation, who among other noteworthy things (like the Anthology of American Folk Music) made some groundbreaking animated films exploring esoteric subjects and handmade visual effects. This rare screening will feature live soundtracking from local musical groups The Portland Sacred Harp Singers, local rock band Collate, jazz combo Roman Norfleet and The Be Present Art Group, and local folkie Jay Ringer. Now that’s a diverse and mind-expanding package of artsy fun! Saturday, June 15th at 7:30 PM at the Hollywood Theatre. Get your $15 advance tickets here.
