This week we turn our attention to the northwest corner of Oregon, where the mighty Columbia River spills into the Pacific Ocean amid breathtaking scenery, barking seals, golf courses, and the best coffee you’ll find on the coast. Clatsop County has a lot to offer even when the weather is bad (a distinct possibility year-round). But even if the sun is shining, you’ll still want to set aside some time to explore what the towns of Cannon Beach, Seaside, Gearhart, Warrenton, and Astoria have to offer. It turns out, there’s a lot going on this weekend! If you don’t find something on this list that strikes your fancy, make sure to check in with local resources for other options.

Tufted Puffin Walks, June 8th and 9th

You made it to the Oregon Coast! Why not get going early and beat the crowd to the beach? If you head down to the Gower Street Beach entrance in Cannon Beach at 7:30 AM, you can take a guided tour to view the resident Tufted Puffins. These incredible birds nest along the coastal rocks, giving onlookers a chance to check out their unique plumage and audacious eyebrows. Spotting scopes and binoculars are provided by Sea Breeze Court. This is a free walk, so there’s no reason to not get your bird nerd on! More details are available here.

Saturday Beach Yoga: Move and Meditate, June 8th

If you’re looking for a more inward-oriented coastal experience, Cannon Beach Yoga Arts offers a yoga class on the beach every Saturday. As long as the weather forecast stays consistent, this will be a great weekend to try it out. Imagine doing your favorite asanas with crashing waves and seagulls soaring overhead! You don’t even need to get up early to enjoy this class, which runs 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Meet at Whale Park in Cannon Beach, and bring a towel or mat. Drop ins with $25 cash are welcome, or sign up online in advance. Namaste!

2nd Saturday Art Walk, June 8th

If you got your fill of the beach early in the day and are looking for more of a cultural diversion, head to Astoria for the 2nd Saturday Art Walk. Astoria is home to a trove of galleries and artist studios, and once a month they all open their doors, put out some snacks, and invite folks in to take a look at their offerings. Like most coastal towns, there’s plenty of seashore-themed artwork, but you’ll find that Astoria has more variety and sophistication than might be expected. The event runs from noon – 8:00 PM on Saturday. Take a look at the Art Walk map at this link for the locations of participating exhibits.

Astoria Sunday Market, June 9th

While we’re talking about the charms of Astoria, you’ll also want to spend some time at the Sunday Market. From 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM the market takes over 12th Street in historic downtown Astoria. You can explore gifts, clothing, craftwork, live music, and great food from up to 200 rotating local vendors. This is the 24th year of the market, and it has become a favorite of locals and tourists alike. Check this link for a current map. If you’re tight on funds, they accept SNAP and EBT up to $20 for food. Enjoy!
