Fresh Start: Reflecting and Planning for the New Year
Every year is a fresh start for reflecting and planning for the new year ahead. Whether or not you typically set New Year’s resolutions, this moment can offer an opportunity to look back, especially on challenging experiences like a DUI arrest, and explore how they can lead to growth. To help you navigate this process, we’ve created a few exercises, and reflection prompts to gently guide you through reflecting on the past year and setting intentions for a more hopeful future.
Reflecting on the Past Year
1. Acknowledge the Challenges:
Think about the most significant obstacles you faced in the past year.
- What were the hardest moments for you?
- What did you learn about yourself through these experiences?
- How did you handle the challenges, and what strengths did you discover in yourself?
2. Celebrate Your Strengths:
Take a moment to recognize what you’re proud of.
- What are the positive changes you’ve made, no matter how small they may seem?
- What accomplishments, personal growth, or moments of resilience stand out to you?
3. Reflect on Relationships:
Consider the relationships that have influenced you.
- Who have you been closest to in the past year, and how have they impacted you?
- Who might you want to reconnect with, or who would you like to nurture or heal a relationship with?

Letting Go and Forgiveness
1. Identify What Needs Forgiving:
There may be lingering feelings or events that weigh you down.
- What actions or words, from yourself or others, still hold a heavy weight on your heart?
- Are there moments of guilt or resentment that you’re holding on to?
- How would it feel to forgive, or at least release these burdens, so you can move forward with a lighter heart?

Planning for the Year Ahead
1. Set Intentions and Goals:
Think about the habits or changes you’d like to embrace.
- What new habits do you want to create or strengthen in your life?
- What specific goals would you like to achieve this year, both big and small?
- How can you make progress in a way that feels doable and meaningful?
2. Define Your Support System:
Identify the people who will be there for you.
- Who are the individuals you can lean on during tough times?
- How can you nurture these relationships to ensure you have the support you need?
- Are there new connections you want to foster this year?
3. Embrace New Experiences:
Growth often comes from stepping outside of our comfort zones.
- What new experiences, skills, or adventures are you curious about?
- Is there something you’ve always wanted to try, but haven’t yet?
- How can you take small steps to explore the unknown and embrace the excitement of new challenges?
Taking time to reflect on the past and set meaningful intentions can help you begin the year with a sense of purpose and clarity.
