When we experience new things, it helps to prevent living our lives on autopilot

Here at RDF, we’re firm believers in walking the talk. We can’t expect our clients to make hard changes in their lives, or step outside of their comfort zone to try new things, unless we’re willing to do the same. So, we have what we call “Expanding Experiences.” What this means is that for at least two weeks out of every month, we pick one day to spend our lunch hour learning something new. To do this, we have someone come in to teach us a new skill. So far we have done painting, knitting (which is harder than you might think!), yoga, and one our favorites was assembling and painting ukuleles. We even learned – or at least gave it an honest effort – to play a song or two as a group, which was a lot of fun!

One of our attorneys said, “I haven’t done something like this since the 8th grade.” And, that’s really what it’s all about, right? Using parts of your brain that you don’t normally use, while finding ways for our team to spend time together.

One of our most recent sessions was practicing meditation. Our instructor, Julia Bray, is amazing and does a really great job at sharing some pretty fascinating insight into the practice as well. Here is a great group shot of some of the RDF team feeling pretty “zen” afterwards. We were all re-energized and ready to take on the rest of the day with clear minds and positive attitudes. We will definitely have Julia back again in the near future!

Another recent ‘experience’ was improv. Not only was it tons of fun, it was pretty eye-opening too, which you might not expect from an improv class. As one of the RDF team members explained, “Jay Flewelling helps you to be in the “now” and react to what is really happening, rather than your expectations of what will be happening, and he teaches you how to be open and how to stumble. It makes you feel vulnerable – and stronger because of it. I didn’t think that improv could teach me so much that is useful in my daily life. Jay proved otherwise!” The team can’t wait for our next improv session.
