The Wheel of Health: Small Actions, Big Change
At Reynolds Defense Firm, we believe that people don’t get DUIs when everything in their lives is going right. When all aspects of well-being—from mindfulness to community and physical health—are in balance, we make better decisions. However, when one area of life feels out of control, it can have a ripple effect, leaving us feeling overwhelmed or unsteady.
This is where the Wheel of Health comes in. Originally developed by Dr. John Travis in the 1970s, the Wheel of Health is a simple yet powerful model for visualizing and improving your overall well-being. It reminds us that wellness is holistic—every aspect of our lives is interconnected.
How the Wheel of Health Aligns with Our Firm’s Culture
We see firsthand how imbalances in life—whether they stem from stress, lack of support, or unhealthy coping mechanisms—can lead to choices that have long-term consequences. That’s why we encourage our clients not just to resolve their legal case but also to focus on their overall well-being. Our commitment to personal growth, mindfulness, and health extends beyond the courtroom.
We believe in empowering our clients to rebuild their lives in a way that supports better decisions and a stronger sense of self. Whether it’s through therapy, community support, or developing healthier habits, taking steps to balance your “wheel” can help you move forward with confidence and clarity.
The Spokes of the Wheel of Health
Dr. Travis’s Wheel of Health highlights the interconnected aspects of wellness. Each area of the Wheel of Health represents an essential piece of your overall well-being. By focusing on each area, you can create a life that feels more centered and resilient:
- Mindful Awareness: Being present in the moment with curiosity and openness.
- Physical Environment: Creating a peaceful, safe, and uncluttered space.
- Nutrition & Lifestyle: Making small, consistent choices that nourish your body.
- Mental & Emotional Well-Being: Managing stress and building resilience.
- Fulfillment & Purpose: Living in alignment with your values and goals.
- Physical Activity & Fitness: Incorporating regular movement to boost energy and health.
- Sleep & Rest: Prioritizing quality rest to recharge your body and mind.
- Community: Building meaningful relationships and fostering a sense of belonging.
Taking Action with the Wheel of Health
The beauty of the Wheel of Health is that it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress. Here’s an exercise we’ve come up with inspired by the Wheel of Health that you can try as part of your journey toward balance and better decision-making:
1. Prioritize Your Areas
Take a moment to reflect on which areas of the wheel feel most out of balance. Rank them from most to least important to help you focus on the changes that will have the biggest impact.
2. “Focus Four” Strategy
Try to limit the areas that you want to improve within 3 months, to no more than four.
- New research has shown that it takes 66 days on average to make something a habit.
- Choosing more than 4 areas can lead to burnout, as it might be difficult to maintain the necessary consistency across so many areas in just three months. To maximize success, focus on a few key areas and build momentum, and then expand to others as you feel comfortable.
3. Create a Small Action for Each Area
For each area, choose one small, achievable action. Here are some examples:
- Mindful Awareness: Spend 5 minutes each morning practicing mindfulness like focusing on something that inspires awe or spend some time checking in with each part of your body and how you it feels.
- Physical Activity: Take a 10-minute walk three times a week.
- Sleep & Rest: Go to bed 30 minutes earlier.
- Nutrition: Add one serving of vegetables to your lunch each day.
4. Track & Reflect
Use a simple weekly tracker to check off your actions. At the end of each week, reflect on:
- What was easy?
- What was challenging?
- What can you adjust to make the next week more successful?
5. Celebrate Progress
Even the smallest victories deserve recognition. Celebrate weekly progress to stay motivated and focused on your journey.
