Gresham originally was known as Campground as pioneers often stopped and made camp in route to Portland. In order to establish itself as a city, Gresham needed a post office and postal code. A local storeowner provided space in his store and the post office was established in May 1884, however, Gresham was not incorporated as a city until 1905.
